Career Success Deliberate Practice

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Career Success: Deliberate Practice-Part 2 It was my first trial. I wish I could remember how many times I practiced my opening statement, how many times I practiced my cross-examinations and how many times I practiced my closing argument. I realize now that I deliberately practiced each and broke each into chunks when I was practicing. Yesterday, I shared with you why practicing deliberately doing is an important component of becoming more successful. In part 2, I want to share with you how to do it, and how I might help you do it if I was coaching you. Yesterday was not my first post on deliberate practice. I have written about deliberate practice a couple of times in 2009, I wrote: Rainmaking: What Does It Take?  In that post I mentioned an important book by Geoff Colvin: Talent is Overrated.    Shortly thereafter, I wrote:  Rainmaking If Not Talent What Does It Take? So, what is deliberate practice? According to Colvin: Yesterday, I mentioned another great book on this subject: The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s How written by Daniel Coyle. Chapter 4 is “The Three Rules of Deep Practice” and begins with a Samuel Beckett quote: Try again. Fail again. Fail better. In that chapter, Coyle writes about “chunking.” Here is one important part of the concept. First, the participants look at the task as a whole â€" as one big chunk, the megacircuit. Second, they divide it into its smallest possible chunks. Third, they play with time, slowing the action  down, then speeding it up, to learn its inner architecture. Coyle also writes: Deep practice is not simply about struggling; it’s about seeking out a particular struggle, which involves a cycle of distinct actions. Coyle writes about two teachers who studied how John Wooden coached during practice. It was nothing like they expected. He taught in chunks, using what he called the “whole-part method”â€" he would teach players an entire move, then break it down to work on its elemental actions. He formulated laws of learning (which might be retitled laws of myelin): explanation, demonstration, imitation, correction, and repetition. How would we deliberately practice? Ok, how would I help you deliberately practice and break tasks into chunks. Let’s take two areas: Deliberate practice-Blogging If I coach you on blogging, it will be somewhat like participating in a creative writing course with lots of feedback on your writing. We will begin with your topic. For each topic, I will ask you to explain why your potential clients, referral sources and other readers would find the topic valuable. Next we will work on your headlines for each topic. Next, we will work on your first sentence. Next we will work on the remainder of your first paragraph. When we finally work on your last paragraph and last sentence, I will have you tell me what you expect your reader’s takeaway to be, and what you want the reader to think of you. Deliberate practice-Presentations If I coach you on making presentations, it will be like participating in an acting class, only we will cover more than your presentation style. We will focus first on your subject. Once again I will ask you to explain why your audience will find your presentation valuable. Next, if you create slides, we will go over your slides one-by-one. Next, I will have you give your opening to me and we will go over it until you know that you will get the attention of your audience. I will shoot video of you presenting and we will go over your eye contact, facial expressions, posture, gestures and how you are connecting with your audience. Then we will turn to your speaking voice. After going over your main points, we will go over how you close your presentation. Then, I will ask you to give your presentation to me from start to finish. Those are examples of deliberate practice with feedback. When I read many lawyer blogs or watch many lawyer presentations, I am left with the impression that the lawyers writing and presenting have not deliberately practiced and gotten feedback. I will leave you with a link to an interesting blog that was posted Monday:  How to Acquire Any New Skill in 20 Hours or Less. I am not convinced that I can acquire any new skill in 20 hours or less. If I could, then I would be speaking French fluently. For our purpose, read closely near the end of the blog where the writer lays out the core method to acquire any new skill. I think his ideas on that fit what I have been describing to you. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Are Cyborg Human Augmentation a Reasonable Accomodation - Workology

Are Cyborg Human Augmentation a Reasonable Accomodation - Workology Reasonable Accommodation Its Role in at Work I am pretty certain two questions popped into your mind as you read this title. First, what the heck is “human augmentation” and second, what do you mean “reasonable accommodation”? In this post of  a look to the future: human augmentation as reasonable accommodation  I will answer both questions. What is Human Augmentation? Human augmentation has been around for a long time. Humans have used eyeglasses, artificial limbs, false teeth and much more to augment or replace missing capabilities. More recently we have seen devices that not only replace normal actions but provide “super human” capabilities. A notable example was Olympic athlete Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius who competed in London (and now infamous for what happened in South Africa.) We have always wondered about it in characters such as RoboCop or Darth Vader, the police officer in I Robot or the new Bourne character.   Anyone remember The Six Million Dollar Man? The military has already developed suits that provide a soldier with super-human strength and sensory capabilities. Given this already existent technology is it too far off in the future to think that “normal” people will be given some of these capabilities. I argue that it is here and now. We are already implanting lenses in eyes and …. Well you know what else is being implanted to “augment” certain characteristics. We use laser to repair eyes and implant hearing devices. But what could be used beyond that? Could we use genetic enhancement to make people “better”? Some legislators think this may be possible and several states have already tried to make it illegal for an employer to require an employee to implant a computer chip in their bodies. Reasonable Accommodation Its Role in at Work As the science of augmentation increases the costs of such technologies will go down. It is already significantly cheaper to have laser eye surgery, to the point that there is price competition among doctors. With that kind of change occurring I do not think it is too far out of the realm of possibility to one day be asked to pay for some such device or procedure as a reasonable accommodation in order to allow an employee to continue to do their job. Already we are paying for equipment, e.g., lifts, chairs, standing desks, treadmill desks, etc. At the SHRM conference in June I saw some of these devices demonstrated. We all know that one of the major considerations in the definition of “reasonable” is the cost. Today many companies can turn down such an accommodation as being too costly thus unreasonable. But as that cost comes down does reasonableness go up? Are you prepared to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act when it comes to Human Augmentation? Today some of those devices are being implanted into humans and its not for an army for worker drone  or cyborg robots. However, generally that is a medical expense paid for by health insurance. What if one day, perhaps in the not too distant future, the cost of such a device would be so low that an employee might show that with such a device they can perform the essential functions of the job for which they are applying or have been performing? They are qualified, they can perform the essential functions and the device is not so expensive. In fact by implanting something you can actually make them a better employee than they have been in the past. Does that not sound “reasonable’? Well, maybe not now, but that reality may not be that far away. For further information you may find the article by Dan Rowinski,  Futurist’s Cheat Sheet: Human Augmentation  to be interesting.

Obviously, the typically long-ish sit tight for the G train took simple seconds, I escaped the tram 40 minutes before Rebecca Megan requested that the specialists show up. I chose to make a beeline for tonefarmer at any rate, calculating that my two hands may be useful for setting up, stuffing goody sacks, and so on ( I aint over some difficult work yet!). First, let’s get familiar with the term functional resume. A functional resume is one that highlights certain skills, instead of the traditional chronological format. Those looking to change careers should use this technique to draw attention away from their former job titles and play up skills that may be relevant in their new desired field. This sounds like a great idea, except there’s only one problem: recruiters and hiring managers are all too aware of this method. They know you’re trying to hide something. They’ve seen it a million times, and it’s sure to get your resume in the trashcan. A Better Approach So what can you do instead? You should know everything there is to know about the company you are after. Figure out what skills they value the most, and use that knowledge to your advantage. This will get you noticed by HR. Third, don’t forget about any freelance or unpaid work you’ve done. This can be valuable when trying to change careers. Everyone has an  executive bio, but this is one chance to stand out from the crowd. If it’s relevant work, it doesn’t matter if you were paid or not! If you don’t have any of this type of experience, now’s the time to consider it. If you’re truly passionate about a career change, you have to use every possible angle to your advantage. Convince Employers You’re Committed Now for the most important part. Since you can’t rely solely on your executive bio, you must communicate your passion for this position through your resume as well. Since you may be lacking the typical work history, this is where you can make up for that. It’s vital to emphasize you have thought this change through and are committed to it. The employer needs to feel confident you won’t quickly grow tired of the work and leave after they took a chance on you. Now you know the basics: start with the best executive resume format, don’t use a functional resume and play up your passion. By using these tips, you will get in the door of your dream job in to time!    If you need more guidance during the process, consider enlisting the help of a  cover  letter  writing  service.  There you will find all the tools necessary to create the best resume possible.

Abel proposes that the laborers were around multiple times bound to relate giving commendation and suitable utilization of tone with female administrators. Conversely, they are about twice bound to relate giving analysis and exacting desires with male directors. Also, a wide assemblage of research discloses to us on numerous occasions that, when ladies digress from assumptions of sexual orientation standards, they make individuals awkward and are, thusly, esteemed less likable...Gender predispositions and inconspicuous sexism plagues work environments, and until more ladies are in regarded leadeship positions in which their amiability doesnt matter (and isnt even addressed), we despite everything have an issue.- - AnnaMarie Houlis is a women's activist, an independent columnist and an undertaking devotee with a fondness for incautious performance travel. Salaries top out at age 40

Salaries top out at age 40 Whatever you earn at age 40 is likely to be the top of your earning potential. This is one of a gazillion things Ive learned from talking with Al Lee, the director of quantitative analysis at PayScale. Als data, which is based on the careers of college graduates, is basically that the salary curve for most people in their 20s is very steep. Then it starts to flatten in the 30s, and then you get into the land of the 3% raise. In real dollars, those 3% raises are not actually raises, they are just keeping up with inflation. The information is grim. But here are some things you can do with it: 1. Go where the men are. To be precise, pay tops out at age 38 for women ($61K) and age 45 for men ($95K). But the difference, according to PayScale data, is not due to unequal pay for equal work. Rather, the difference is that women choose lower paying careers, and women are more likely to take time out of the workforce for kids. So the first thing you can do to prevent your salary from flat-lining is choose a career that men dominate. But its not just about industryit is also about influence. Stick to line-management positions rather than support roles. For example, skip human resources and go to supply chain management. 2. Rewrite your resume. If youre at the beginning of your career, focus on accomplishments rather than responsibilities. This makes you look like youre in a higher pay bracket so you will get larger salary increases. If youve been in the workforce for a while, cut anything that is more than 15 years old, including the date of your college graduation. Al says that there is no premium paid for two decades of experience because jobs change so quickly that long-gone experience is not particularly relevant. And because age discrimination creates a sort of penalty for more than 15 years of experience. So just leave it off. (Good resume editing tips here, at Quint Careers.) 3. Be a lawyer. Have I ever given this advice before? I dont think so. Even the American Bar Association reports that law school is a ripoff. But Im open to counter-argumentsAl says that the only profession where your pay increases after 20 years is in law. Because laws change very slowly, especially procedural law, and so much of being a good lawyer is your on-the-job training. 4. Specialize. By your mid 30s, if you dont have a specialty, its hard to get your salary into the next bracket. You earn more money if your talents are more scarce. (Heres some information about how to specialize.) Also, dont give up hope if you have no idea what youre doing in your mid-20s. As long as you figure things out by the time youre 30, you will get a premium for 15 years of experience before your salary stops rising. 5. Buy a house assuming you wont get a raise. Ever. When it comes to houses in the U.S., the average age of a first-time buyer is 33. So people go through their 20s gaining super-high raises, and then people buy a house in their mid-30s with the assumption that the raises will continue. In fact, though, you should buy a house preparing for your real income to remain unchanged until age 55, when it is likely to go down. 6. Recognize your limitations. People eventually start to realize that they are not going to get to the very top. They see that only one out of 100 web designers is the director, and only one out of 50 directors is a VP. Al calls this the funnel effect, and he says many people recognize this and start to trade time for money; people see that chasing the increasingly smaller raises is not as fulfilling as doing a wide range of other things with their time. 7. Focus on maintenance. Most people in their 40s have a lot going on. Taking care of aging parents, young kids, community organizationsall these jobs are falling on people in their 40s, which means its not a good time to be trying also to leverage ones highest earning power. So instead of killing yourself trying to earn more and more, be realistic and go into maintenance mode. One of the most common but least-talked about career moves is to get to a relatively high spot and then see how much you can cut back in terms of effort and still maintain that level of salary and/or prestige. This seems like a reasonable strategy for a wide range of people. So do small experiments with cutting back early in your career because creating enormous efficiencies takes practice. And a nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic is not the training you need for this type of change. Do you feel stuck in your career? I want to give you advice! Women Working In A Mans World- Be Anything You Want To Be

Women Working In A Man’s World- Be Anything You Want To Be There are still careers out there which you still generally imagine women doing, and then there are some that you believe are still careers for men only. However, just as the military is beginning to let women be on the front lines, so too are women taking jobs in careers you may not have imagined for them.  Just as men can become hairdressers and women’s clothing designers, so too could women work in industries such as auto repair and even ranch hand. There is no reason a woman can’t take on any career she wants, and can learn the required skills.  Fixing Homes  Most people don’t picture women doing roofing jobs, but there are plenty of ladies out there doing just that, and more.  You don’t have to hire a man to put in your new windows or do your flooring, women are just as capable of doing these types of jobs.  In fact, there are plenty of women out there running their own house flipping businesses and doing much, if not all, of the work fixing up these homes themselves.  Working In A Shop  You may be surprised at how common it is to find at least one women working in auto care in your community. Although it’s not so common that you will find a ton of them,  they are there. For women in need of auto repairs, taking their vehicle to a woman can help them feel less like they are being taken advantage of.  Not that all men working in auto repair    take advantage of the fact that  women generally know a lot less about cars and car repairs.   Women can easily enough take courses in car care, and have the ability to be great car automotive technicians. Until people stop buying cars there will always be a need for people of both sexes to get into this industry.  Strange Career Choices  These are some of the more basic careers that many people still see as man run, but you’re also seeing women take on other man-centered careers. Just take a moment to turn on your television and watch women join the crews of crab boats, or driving semi trucks.   As a woman, with drive and with dreams, you can take on any career challenge you want. Don’t let the fact that the majority of people in the field you want to go into are the opposite sex keep you from following your dreams and having the career you want. Get the training and get to work! Alternative Careers:  The Choices Are Yours In this day and age, although there is still a gender gap when it comes to wages, there are far less rules keeping women from taking on the roles of men in society and in the workspace. Three Steps to Launch Your Child Toward Career Success

Three Steps to Launch Your Child Toward Career Success Study after study tells us that over 50% of Americans dislike or are even disengaged from their jobs. Perhaps you’ve come to this website because you are one of those people.Maybe your current job no longer challenges you, or you’ve realized you’ve been on the wrong career path for your interests and talents. Or maybe you’re under-employed or unemployed and you’re looking for something that will use your full potential.evalThe knock-on effect of job dissatisfaction can be huge â€" stress related illness, high absenteeism, low morale, and on and on. You may be experiencing some of those effects. And your kids are watching. What if the children you love grow up to work in jobs they hate? What if they end up dreading Mondays, celebrating Hump Day, and announcing with relief, “T.G.I.F.”? Can those dismal studies and statistics on job dissatisfaction be changed for the next generation?Fortunately, the answer is yes.1. Make it clear to your kids that you’re on a path to care er successWe all make mistakes, and in an age appropriate way, make sure your children understand how you’re working to improve your career situation. When our children see us strive for something better, it makes them proud to be a part of the family, and it provides them a great example of persistence and resiliency.2. Try to leave work problems at workUse your commute to defuse and de-stress so your career dissatisfaction doesn’t come home with you. Instead, bring home the positives. If you received an encouraging note or a positive review of something you worked on, post it on the refrigerator among the report cards, quizzes, and art of your children.Doing so can help them view work as a responsibility and an opportunity to contribute their talents to a greater good. As a result, they’ll go into their careers with a better attitude.3. Finally, keep track of your children’s strengths, talents, interests, and achievementsBy age six, they’re usually anxious to show off wh at they’re good at, and it’s during these elementary school years that we can see their true areas of giftedness.evalBut by adolescence, they’ll start being pulled by peer pressure, societal expectations, and school grading measurements that imply what they’re good at, and theoretically, what they’re not so good at. These pressures and expectations will start to drown out their memories of what they loved to do when they were younger. With your perspective, you can clearly see the true skills and interests of your kids, and you can understand how much better it would be to apply those skills and interests in their day-to-day work as adults.Recording interests and strengths from those earlier years will provide excellent material when it’s time to choose vocations or college majors. The result? Better career decisions for a more fulfilling job and life.evalEncourage discussion when your children share dreams of their future, and share some of the career lessons you’ve le arned as appropriate. As they grow older, be sure to point out what you’ve seen over the yearsâ€"their desires, their talents, their achievements, and the positive attributes they bring to the world. Your insight can help propel them into a career that’s a perfect match.
